‘Don’t be afraid of Covid,’ Trump tells Americans as he prepares to leave hospital

US President Donald Trump stated that he will be leaving the hospital today at 6:30pm EST. Trump has been a patient at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since Friday evening, less than 24 hours after announcing that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The news came via Trump’s Twitter account. In addition to providing an update on his health, Trump, who is 74 and obese, told his followers not to fear the virus or let it “dominate” their lives.

“I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good!” he tweeted. “Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”

A lot of questions remain about the actual state of Trump’s health, as well as when and where he contracted the virus. Press briefings from his team of doctors have only added to the confusion regarding the timeline and severity of his illness.

Trump disclosed late Thursday night that he and First Lady Melania Trump had both tested positive. The following morning it was reported that he was experiencing “mild symptoms” but no temperature. Later he was said to be “fatigued” and his case was described as “moderate.” Then it was revealed that he had been administered an experimental therapy that hasn’t been approved for use yet.

Later that afternoon he was taken to hospital via chopper, and the next day his doctors refused to provide specifics about his temperature, vital signs and oxygen levels, insisting that Trump was recovering without any serious complications.

Eventually it emerged that he had been given supplemental oxygen on two occasions, and also that he’d been treated with remdesivir and dexamethasone, the latter of which is reported reserved for severe cases.

There was more controversy Sunday when Trump made an appearance outside the hospital, waving to a group of his supporters from the back seat of an SUV driven by Secret Service agents, potentially putting them at risk of infection.

And now, while Trump broadcasts his supposed full recovery from Covid-19, White House physician Dr Sean Conley is insisting that the president is “not out of the woods yet.”

Presumably Trump will self quarantine after returning to the White House, but at this point anything is possible.

The United States has by far the most Covid-19 deaths with more than 210,000. Almost 8 million Americans have been infected.

About John Christie

I read and write about (mostly Australian) business, politics, culture and the like. In other words, whatever happens to catch my fancy at a given moment. George Orwell wrote a column called "As I Please," in which he scribbled about whatever was on his mind. Think of me like that--only, you know, without the literary brilliance.
